Partnering with Families to Prevent E-Bike and E-Scooter Accidents

Dear FPS Families,

I am writing to address a serious and growing safety concern involving motorized cycles such as e-bikes and e-scooters in our community. As the popularity of these devices increases, we are seeing more tragic and preventable injuries and, heartbreakingly, even deaths. Just this past week, a 15-year-old boy lost his life in an e-bike crash in Trumbull.

As a driver in Fairfield, I have personally witnessed dangerous behavior involving e-bikes and e-scooters, including children riding into busy intersections, ignoring traffic signals, and not wearing helmets. It is only a matter of time before a life-threatening accident happens in our own town.

It is critical that all parents/guardians understand the speed capabilities, legal regulations, and serious dangers associated with these devices.

We strongly encourage families to carefully consider the risks before purchasing e-bikes or e-scooters. If your child already uses one, please take time to discuss the importance of safe and responsible riding. Just as we take great care in preparing our children to drive a car, we must also ensure they understand how to safely operate these high-speed electric devices. Many students are traveling at speeds exceeding 20 miles per hour without helmets, putting themselves at serious risk. Together, we can take steps to prevent future tragedies.

The Fairfield Police Department has released an informational video outlining the different classifications of motorized cycles and the laws that apply to them. As we look ahead to the start of the school year in August, we will continue partnering with the Fairfield Police to educate students and families about road safety.

Thank you for your support and cooperation on this critical issue. We look forward to a safe and successful school year.

Sincerely,

Michael J. Testani
