School Safety & Emergency Preparedness

Dear FPS Families,

Welcome back! We hope you and your family had a wonderful summer, and we are looking forward to welcoming our students back for another great school year. 

As always, the safety and well-being of our students and staff remain among our highest priorities. As we begin the new school year, we want to take a moment to share some important information about our approach to school safety and emergency preparedness.

Fairfield Public Schools, in partnership with the Fairfield Police Department, continues to use the Standard Response Protocol (SRP) to provide students and staff with clear, consistent actions to follow during a variety of situations that may occur at school.

Fairfield Public Schools uses the I Love U Guys Foundation Standard Response Protocol (SRP), which provides consistent language and actions for students, staff, and first responders. The five actions are Hold, Secure, Lockdown, Evacuate, and Shelter. These concepts should already be familiar to students from previous years.

Beginning the School Year:

  • On the first day of school, students will review each SRP action with one simple goal: Students and staff should understand what to do when an SRP action is called before they ever experience it during an actual emergency.
  • During the first few weeks of school, students will participate in a fire drill and a Lockdown drill to reinforce these procedures in a calm and familiar setting.
  • All instruction and exercises are conducted in an age-appropriate and trauma-informed manner, with an emphasis on familiarity and preparedness.
  • Families are encouraged to view the I Love U Guys Foundation's student video, which provides a helpful overview of each action: 5 Minutes, 5 Actions: The Standard Response Protocol (SRP)

Drills Throughout the Year:

  • Following the first month, schools will continue required preparedness exercises throughout the year. Families will be notified by their individual school one week in advance of a crisis response drill, although the specific date and time may not be shared.
  • At least three additional crisis response drills will occur between October and June. In months without a crisis response drill, fire drills will be conducted as required by law.

Visiting our Schools:

  • When visiting our schools, families should continue using Raptor Visitor Safe. If you created a Raptor Passport last year, it should remain valid. 
  • If you have not yet created your Raptor Passport, we encourage you to visit our website. Creating a mobile Raptor Passport makes the check-in and check-out process quicker and easier. 
  • Visitors without a Raptor Passport should be prepared to present a photo ID when entering a school facility.
