A Message From The IRS Regarding Tax Credits & Free Filing Services For Families

The IRS wants to encourage all families who qualify to claim the earned income tax credit and the child tax credit. Unfortunately, there are too many families who qualify for the earned income tax credit and the child tax credit but do not claim these credits.  This is especially true for families who do not have a tax filing requirement due to their lower income levels. These families are not only missing out on getting refunded any tax withheld from their pay, but they are also missing out on the earned income tax credit (up to $7,430) and the child tax credit (up to $1,600 per child) as well. The IRS estimates that almost a quarter of eligible families do not claim the earned income tax credit. This means that billions of dollars’ worth of these refundable tax credits are not getting into the hands of families in need. Even families that owe no taxes may qualify to receive earned income tax credit and child tax credit refunds! The earned income tax credit is one of the federal government's largest antipoverty programs.
