A Message From FPS Superintendent Michael J. Testani – Helpful Resources to Support Children In Times of Crisis

Dear FPS Families,

I hope this message finds you well. As this very difficult week comes to a close, we continue to be deeply saddened by the acts of terror that have shaken Israel and its communities. Fairfield is home to many families with ties to the Middle East and the loss of innocent lives and the trauma inflicted is a tragedy that affects us all. Our hearts remain with the victims and their families.

Terrorism has no place in our world, and we vehemently condemn such acts of violence that threaten the peace and stability of any region. In times like these, it is crucial to reaffirm our commitment to peace, unity, and security. We support efforts to bring those responsible for this attack to justice and to work towards a safer and more secure future for all.

This tragic event is a heartbreaking reminder of the importance of promoting peace, tolerance, and understanding among all people, regardless of their background or beliefs. Now more than ever, it is crucial to foster an environment where all members of our school community feel both safe and valued for the human beings they are.

The entire school community understands that the well-being of your child is a top priority, and we want to help you prepare to support them during times of crisis. Here are some essential steps you can take:

1. Open Communication: Encourage open, honest communication with your child. Create a safe space for them to share their thoughts and feelings.

2. Listen Actively: When your children talk about their concerns, listen without judgment. Sometimes, just being heard can provide immense relief.

3. Stay Calm: Your calm demeanor can have a reassuring effect on your child. Be a steady presence during challenging times.

4. Seek Professional Help: If needed, consult a mental health professional. They can offer expert guidance and assistance.

5. Routine and Stability: Maintain a routine as much as possible. Predictability can provide comfort during turbulent times.

6. Self-Care: Take care of your own mental and emotional health. You'll be better equipped to support your child when you're well-rested and resilient.

7. Encourage Coping Strategies: Help your child develop healthy coping mechanisms, like deep breathing, journaling, or physical activity.

8. Limit Exposure: In the age of digital media, monitor your child's exposure to distressing news or social media that can exacerbate anxiety.

9. Build a Support Network: Reach out to other parents, friends, or family members who can provide additional support to both you and your child.

Please know that you are not alone and that our school community is here for your children. We have attached some helpful resources to assist you in supporting children at home. If you have specific concerns or need additional resources, please don't hesitate to reach out.
