A radio program that tells the story of how our culture is formed by human creativity.  The three minute streaming audio files are accompanied by transcripts.  Average reading level falls within the middle school range.  Examples:   Hall Jackson, Colonial Physician and Zippers and Design and John Roebling and the Brooklyn Bridge


History and Politics Out Loud
 Examples:  MLK's "I Have a Dream"  and FDR declares war on Japan

 

History Channel Speeches

Lost and Found Sound
Collects home recordings of the last one hundred years to be shaped into stories that capture the rituals and sounds of everyday life. Example:  William V. Rathvon, who as a nine-year-old boy, watched and listened to Abraham Lincoln deliver his address at Gettysburg in November 1863


Radio Expeditions
National Geographic blends narrative, interviews, and digital sound to document stories of our world's threatened environments and diverse cultures. This pioneering series is a co-production of NPR and the National Geographic Society.  Example: Ed Viesturs prepares to climb the 26,658 peak of Annapurna in Nepal

 

Special English by Voice of America  A great resource of adapted English   Highlights
Stories with complete text and streaming audio.  (RLMS use Real Player)   It is written in clear and simple English for people whose native language is not English.  It has a core vocabulary of 1500 words.  Most are simple words that describe objects, actions or emotions. 

 

StoryCorps 
Collects the stories and legends of everyday American.  Brief excerpts (3-5 minutes) of these first person narratives are available via National Public Radio.  Example: Poet Billy Collins speaks about his father


This I Believe
A collection of brief essays in which Americans from all walks of life share the personal philosophies and core values that guide their daily lives.  Examples:  Colin Powel speaks America and his immigrant parents and   Bill Gates speaks about unleashing the power of creativity.

A daily dose of history and poetry from Garrison Keillor

The State of NY lets you assess career interests, read about careers including skills, tasks, education, wages, and job outlook.  Many jobs include a brief video.  Example:  Veterinarians  (click on video icon at far right)
