Engines of Our Ingenuity
  A radio program that tells the story of how our culture is formed by human creativity.  The three minute streaming audio files are accompanied by transcripts.  Average reading level falls within the middle school range.  Examples:   Hall Jackson, Colonial Physician and Zippers and Design and John Roebling and the Brooklyn Bridge 
 
Poetry Out Loud -- Audio Guide
  Poetry Out Loud, sponsored by the National Endowment of the Arts, encourages the nation's youth to learn about great poetry through memorization and performance.  This site features some marvelous readings by professional actors.  Site also features an extensive collection of poems as well as "Today's Poet."
 
Special English by Voice of America  A great resource of adapted English
  Stories with complete text and streaming audio.  (RLMS use Real Player)   It is written in clear and simple English for people whose native language is not English.  It has a core vocabulary of 1500 words.  Most are simple words that describe objects, actions or emotions.  Highlights
 
Story Corps 
  Collects the stories and legends of everyday American.  Brief excerpts (3-5 minutes) of these first person narratives are available via National Public Radio.  Example: Poet Billy Collins speaks about his father.
 
This I Believe
  A collection of brief essays in which Americans from all walks of life share the personal philosophies and core values that guide their daily lives.  Examples:  Colin Powel speaks America and his immigrant parents and   Bill Gates speaks about unleashing the power of creativity.
 
The Writer's Almanac
  A daily dose of history and poetry from Garrison Keillor
