MAKE REGIONAL CONNECTIONS:
If you have trouble locating information about your city, expand your search to the country.  If you have trouble locating information about your country, expand to the region.  
For example:

traditional food China

MAKE HISTORIC CONNECTIONS:
Add historic periods to your to your strategy.  If you're studying Turkey, try using Ottoman Empire.  
For example: 
Ottoman government

MAKE CULTURAL CONNECTIONS:
Religion was a very important influence during this period.  If you are having trouble finding information about your country's culture, consider incorporating the country's major religion in your search strategy.
